JW's Favorite Essential Mixes of 2011

2011 saw me spending more time in my car than ever before. I commute 39 miles each way to & from the office, so I've got plenty of time in any given week to catch up on the latest music.

Music Monday - Electronica Classics Recorded In New Orleans

Since yesterday's Katrina Retrospective post deviated from my traditional Set Sunday series, I'm reappropriating this week's Music Monday post with a hand-picked selection of four electronica performances recorded in New Orleans over the past 15 years.

The first two are drum & bass mixes from events I had the pleasure of attending at the State Palace Theatre.  Shy FX performed at "Caffeine Mean Joe Greene" in August of 2001, and Ed Rush & Optical performed at "Zoolu 8" during Mardi Gras 2002.

The final two mixes represent the oldest and newest recordings I have of electronica events in New Orleans.  One is a recording of legendary electronica duo Orbital's performance at the French Quarter House of Blues during November of 1996.  While it's only encoded at 96kbps, the 1.5 hour recording is still quite listenable, and a personal favorite in my collection.  The final mix is a pristine recording at 320kbps from Mark Farina during his performance at the Moloko Lounge last fall.

As the world waxes nostalgic about the Crescent City this week, take these sets as examples of what made New Orleans special for me.

2009 was my favorite of the decade when it came to excellent music gracing the weekly Essential Mix show. As Pete Tong put it during last weekend's rebroadcast of Sharam's Essential Mix of the Year, 2009 truly was a "vintage year."

One of the most blinding drum & bass mixes ever to grace this Radio 1 time slot. Even people who don't like drum & bass love this one. I listened to the mix 20+ times this year. Great at volume set to 11.

Definitely the most fun mix of the year. Very housey, and lots of remixes of classic tracks you'll undoubtedly recognize. It's like having a party in your head.

Ironically, this took place at Radio 1's weekend in Ibiza, which also saw 2008's most aggressive set: John Digweed's hour-long monster at Amnesia. Keeping in theme, Prydz drops big room track after big room track. This is what an Ibiza set should be.

This was perhaps my sleeper hit of the year. I'd never heard any of the gentleman's work prior to this mix, but it proved to be my favorite heads-down working music of 2009. If trance starts moving in this direction, count me in.

This mix hit me at just the right time. I'd seen some great dubstep DJs at Future Fest two weeks prior, and Caspa's mix continued the head bobbing. Love listening to this one in the car.

I actually didn't like this mix the first two times I listened to it. But upon replay, I realized it's a fantastic snapshot of many styles of house. As you'll be reminded throughout the mix, he's got house in his DNA with heritage in the Electronica Holy Trinity of Detroit, Chicago, & London.

JW / Electronica Classics 021: Julius Papp Test Press July 2000

I ran across this mix during the early summer of 2001 after seeing Julius Papp perform at Freak Fest. A few years have gone by since I last thought about it, although I always remembered enjoying the mix starting off with the lyrics, "Tonight, gonna leave the 9 to 5 upon the shelf, and just enjoy yourself."

Having never listened to all of Michael Jackson's earlier work, I was laughably unaware that those lyrics were sampled from the title track of "Off The Wall." As I've caught up on the entirety of Michael Jackson's catalog in the last few weeks following his death, this mix from Julius Papp sprang to mind and seemed like a fitting addition the weekly Classics series.

My attempts to hunt down a track list or other information on this set online have yielded no results. For you house music lovers, feel free to add track IDs in the comments if certain songs jump out at you.

Inspired by this past Friday's Independence Day Essential Mix from Erick Morillo, I couldn't resist pulling out this gem from late 2000. I recall my suite mate at Tulane during sophomore year absolutely loving this mix, and his enthusiasm admittedly influenced my appreciation for it.

Another feel good set this week, as I'm still on vacation in Louisiana celebrating my 27th birthday. I had this Essential Mix burned to an MP3 CD and it stayed in my Jetta's CD player for months back in 2003 & 2004. It's got groovy house tunes (as you'll see from the track list below), a few harder tunes towards the end, and stays upbeat throughout.

This will be a keeper for you as the summer months kick into full swing. It was an old standby set when Ashley & I used to cruise around in her Beetle convertible & head to the beach in Delaware. Enjoy!

JW / Electronica Classics 010: JGriffin Live On WTUL New Orleans

I just got back into town from a weekend in New Orleans for the Crescent City Classic & Easter, so it seemed fitting to pull this mix out of the vault.

This two hour set was broadcast on my alma mater's radio station back during the summer of 2005, less than 2 months before Hurricane Katrina struck. I was living in Delaware when I downloaded this house mix, and it immediately struck a chord with me. The track selection is decidedly upbeat, with elements of jazz & Caribbean steel drums. In short, it really captures the musical diversity of the city.

I've really developed a sentimental attachment to this mix. It was the first music played in both my wife's convertible & my first new car. When I need to get in a positive frame of mind, this is likely the mix I'm going to cue up.

JW / Electronica Classics 009: Roger Sanchez Live At Club Queen Paris 2005

Another great house set this week, with a four hour long monster from Roger Sanchez.

I ran across this set back during the summer of 2005 and it stayed on my iPod Shuffle for nearly 6 months as my exclusive running set. The mix never really drags throughout the four hours, and I'm particularly fond of hour number two. It's got a jazzy feel to it and probably struck a chord with me because of fond memories of New Orleans.

I couldn't find a comprehensive track listing for this particular mix, so I'm afraid you'll have to go into it blind. Rest assured, however, you'll recognize some classics in there. ;-)

JW / Electronica Classics 007: Junior Jack & Kid Creme's 2004 Essential Mix

I randomly stumbled across Junior Jack's "Trust It" album during the summer of 2004, and it turned out to be kind of the soundtrack to my last semester at Tulane in New Orleans. It was jazzy, upbeat, and generally captured my optimistic outlook on life.

Wanting to hear more of Junior Jack's works, I discovered this Essential Mix he did with Kid Creme just a few months prior to the "Trust It" release. Over the past 4 years I inevitably put this mix in rotation as the weather turns warmer and I'm looking for a summer frame of mind.

This week's mix is a house favorite of mine from 2004. The highlight of this set for me is Scott Grove's "The Journey" about 20 minutes in, but the entire two hours is really quite good.

During the summer of 2004, this set probably got more play in my MP3 CD player than any other.
