Software Saturday - Boxcar

Boxcar is the Swiss army knife of Push Notifications for the iPhone. By linking your Twitter account to Boxcar, anytime you receive an @-reply or Direct Message on Twitter, you'll receive a Push Notification on your iOS device.

This makes using Twitter on the go a lot easier, since you don't have to open your favorite Twitter app to see if someone has responded to you or mentioned you on the service.

When you receive a Push Notification via Boxcar and then slide to view, the app will launch and then immediately launch your mobile Twitter app so you can see and respond to the message. If you don't immediately slide to view your message, you'll have a badge on your Boxcar app icon when you come back to your device.

While I use Boxcar purely for Twitter Push Notifications, you can also link it to send Push Notifications for Facebook, Gmail, Growl, or RSS feeds.

Boxcar is a free download and sports an optimized interface for both the iPhone & iPad. You can find out more about Boxcar at the developer's website below.

#FF Twitter Recommendations - Real World New Orleans 2010

This week's Follow Friday entry spotlights the Twitter accounts of the cast of the 24th season of MTV's Real World, set in New Orleans.  The 3 month series wrapped up this week, so I wanted to give a hat tip to the cast.  While I have a soft spot in my heart for the cast of the 2000 season in New Orleans (since it coincided with my freshman year of college), I thought the 2010 season did an excellent job of showcasing the city.

If you missed the season, you can watch all 12 episodes on MTV's website here:

Tech Tuesday - Who Not To Be On Twitter

While this is presented in the context of a comic strip, I think there are some valuable take-aways as you look to establish your personal brand on Twitter.  Although I'm sure I've been guilty of a few of these tendencies over 2,500 tweets during the past 3 years, it's worth thinking about whether what you're saying on Twitter really adds any value to the conversation.

To be sure, not everything you post on Twitter has to have intrinsic news-worthiness.  Part of the beauty of the service is that it adds a human element to users that sometimes may be abstracted.  But as you grow your follower base, keep in mind that you have an audience and think about why these users began to follow you in the first place.

If you're interested in some of the academic underpinnings, check out this study from Rutgers published earlier this year.  It draws a distinction between "meformers" who talk about themselves, and "informers" who share information.  One isn't necessarily better than the other, but informers tend to have a much larger and engaged audience than meformers.

Actual Facebook Movie Trailer, Spoof YouTube & Twitter Ones

For those who haven't seen these floating around over the past few weeks, each trailer is rather amusing.  I've embedded all three videos below.

The first one is for "The Social Network", an actual film being released later this year that documents the rise of Facebook.  Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nail's fame has signed on to do the score of this film.  It is scheduled to debut in theaters on Friday, October 1.

The second trailer is a spoof of "The Social Network" trailer, profiling a fictional film about the creation of YouTube.

Finally, the last trailer also parodies "The Social Network" trailer, but this time features Twitter as the subject of a fictional film.

Social Media During Disasters

The American Red Cross has released results of a survey about the use of social media during disasters or emergencies.  The PDF report of its findings can be found here:

Some interesting figures are contained within the report, including that over 75% of respondents would expect help to arrive within an hour if they requested help via a social media network.  Personally, I think this expectation is overly optimistic, but it would hinge upon who was in a user's respective social graph.

When Hurricane Ike hit The Woodlands 2 years ago, I realized that we'd likely lose power for a while and find it difficult to communicate with the outside world.  Prior to the storm's landfall in Texas, I e-mailed all of my friends & family, and directed them towards my Twitter page to stay up to date with our progress during & after storm.

This turned out to be a prudent decision, because we did in fact lose power & most cellular connectivity for several days.  Thankfully, SMS messages are surprisingly resilient following natural disasters (they require much less cellular infrastructure to receive & transmit relative to voice & data services).  This allowed me to update Twitter throughout the storm & its aftermath simply by texting the service.

For those interested in seeing my account of "events on the ground", I captured all my tweets from the storm in a blog post last September to mark the 1 year anniversary of Hurricane Ike:

Since that time, I've followed my friends' descriptions of earthquakes on the west coast and crippling blizzards on the east coast, all from my Twitter & Facebook activity streams.  When you want to tell a large group of people you're ok after a disaster, it's tough to find a more efficient way than with one of these social networks.

Writing Wednesday: Twitter Psychological Insights

Some interesting data-driven findings about Twitter are revealed in this study conducted by British psychologists.

I enjoyed the description of "informers vs. meformers" as it relates to tweet content.  I find that my own social graph has a fairly balanced ratio of users who fall into each category.

I'd propose that Twitter as a source of breaking news or emergency response will only continue to grow in importance.  When I want information about something that JUST happened, I always search Twitter first.  Granted, you may end up with content that proves not to be 100% accurate after the dust settles, but no less so than information you'd gather from other sources.  That's just the nature of gathering information quickly.

I Tweet, Therefore I Am

There was an interesting article (linked below) in the New York Times Magazine over the weekend, suggesting that our perceptions of ourselves are subconsciously being filtered through a public lens.  In short, we are curating how we think internally to ensure it meshes with how we project ourselves externally.  Pretty fascinating stuff.

I definitely think the writer has touched upon something that will be studied more in depth as social media becomes increasingly entrenched in the cycle of human communication.  I'd be interested to hear if others have found themselves "thinking in terms of tweets."  On the whole, I think it's a positive thing, as it encourages brevity & impact.  But I realize this may come at the expense of true introspection.

Excellent Article On Social Media Ethics

I just shared this link with my ethics professor via e-mail, but thought it was notable enough to post here, too, as I believe it raises some very poignant ethical questions.

I'm a pretty strong advocate of social media & a fairly heavy user of it, but this article will likely make me take pause the next time I think about whipping out my iPhone to snap a picture when I witness something newsworthy. It's important to self-filter some things, even in times of crises like the Fort Hood shootings or the Iranian election protests. Deciding "what" to self-filter in an age of social media permeation represents one of the most interesting ethical questions of our time.

Here's the link to the article:
