Set Sunday - Sven Väth Live at Rex Club Paris 2008

Sven Väth gets a nod in week two of the Set Sunday series.  Clocking in at just under 5 hours, this monster techno set from the German DJ legend is a true gem in my collection.  When I visited Paris earlier this year, seeing a show at the Rex Club was one of my vacation priorities, given the venue's storied past from performances like this. (See here, here, here, and here for some video clips we shot inside the club.)

One of the highlights of this Väth set for me is the inclusion of an extended remix of the Timo Maas hit "Subtellite".  That track was being hammered during the last half of 2008, and it still brings a smile to my face today.

A tracklisting for this performance proved to be too elusive a document to locate, so you'll have to make do with the raw MP3 file and your ears this week.

JW / Electronica Classics 005: Sven Vath's 1997 Essential Mix

This week's set is my favorite actual "techno" mix of all time. I know the word techno gets tossed around as kind of the umbrella term for electronic music (whereas I prefer "electronica" to encompass it all), so this is actually the mix I use to showcase what true techno sounds like.

Originally broadcast in 1997, I first heard it in 2003 when Radio 1 rebroadcast it as part of their Love Parade Weekend. The first 20 minutes or so of this mix are especially good. Just delightfully synthetic, artificial, and seemingly mathematical. I still cue it up when I need to engage in heavy mental activity...like Stats homework.
