2011 saw me spending more time in my car than ever before. I commute 39 miles each way to & from the office, so I've got plenty of time in any given week to catch up on the latest music.

Music Monday - Electronica Classics Recorded In New Orleans

Since yesterday's Katrina Retrospective post deviated from my traditional Set Sunday series, I'm reappropriating this week's Music Monday post with a hand-picked selection of four electronica performances recorded in New Orleans over the past 15 years.

The first two are drum & bass mixes from events I had the pleasure of attending at the State Palace Theatre.  Shy FX performed at "Caffeine Mean Joe Greene" in August of 2001, and Ed Rush & Optical performed at "Zoolu 8" during Mardi Gras 2002.

The final two mixes represent the oldest and newest recordings I have of electronica events in New Orleans.  One is a recording of legendary electronica duo Orbital's performance at the French Quarter House of Blues during November of 1996.  While it's only encoded at 96kbps, the 1.5 hour recording is still quite listenable, and a personal favorite in my collection.  The final mix is a pristine recording at 320kbps from Mark Farina during his performance at the Moloko Lounge last fall.

As the world waxes nostalgic about the Crescent City this week, take these sets as examples of what made New Orleans special for me.

Music Monday - The Madd Wikkid - Electronola

While I have a passion for both jazz and electronica, the two genres don't frequently intermingle.  So when I saw this posting on Kickstarter about a local New Orleans musician hoping to create an album that combined elements of each musical style, I knew I had to get on board.

The Madd Wikkid, also known as Earl Scioneaux, was in a unique position to have both industry connections within New Orleans and the musical talent to execute on such a project.  By day, Earl is an audio engineer responsible for productions such as this year's excellent "An Album To Benefit Preservation Hall and The Preservation Hall Music Outreach Program".  By night, he works on projects such as Electronola.

Over the course of a year, Earl partnered with heavy hitters such as John Boutte (the man behind the theme song to HBO's Treme), George Porter, Jr., Charmaine Neville, & Jason Marsalis.  The resulting 8 tracks on the album are nothing short of remarkable.

JW's Favorite Essential Mixes Of 2009

2009 was my favorite of the decade when it came to excellent music gracing the weekly Essential Mix show. As Pete Tong put it during last weekend's rebroadcast of Sharam's Essential Mix of the Year, 2009 truly was a "vintage year."

One of the most blinding drum & bass mixes ever to grace this Radio 1 time slot. Even people who don't like drum & bass love this one. I listened to the mix 20+ times this year. Great at volume set to 11.

Definitely the most fun mix of the year. Very housey, and lots of remixes of classic tracks you'll undoubtedly recognize. It's like having a party in your head.

3 - Eric Prydz - Essential Mix 2009-08-08

Ironically, this took place at Radio 1's weekend in Ibiza, which also saw 2008's most aggressive set: John Digweed's hour-long monster at Amnesia. Keeping in theme, Prydz drops big room track after big room track. This is what an Ibiza set should be.

This was perhaps my sleeper hit of the year. I'd never heard any of the gentleman's work prior to this mix, but it proved to be my favorite heads-down working music of 2009. If trance starts moving in this direction, count me in.

This mix hit me at just the right time. I'd seen some great dubstep DJs at Future Fest two weeks prior, and Caspa's mix continued the head bobbing. Love listening to this one in the car.

I actually didn't like this mix the first two times I listened to it. But upon replay, I realized it's a fantastic snapshot of many styles of house. As you'll be reminded throughout the mix, he's got house in his DNA with heritage in the Electronica Holy Trinity of Detroit, Chicago, & London.

JW / Electronica Classics 032: BT's 1995 Essential Mix

This week's selection is particularly memorable, and not just because of Pete Tong's intro which seemingly reveals his personal stance on Essential Mix recordings. It's also notable because it's Brian Transeau's debut on the BBC mix show.

One of my first electronica album purchases was BT's "Ima" and I've considered myself a fan of his work ever since. His performance in New Orleans during the "Movement In Still Life" tour was also my first show at the French Quarter House of Blues way back in September of 2000.

While he's had a few artistic missteps over the years, *cough* ahem *cough*, he's also managed to put together some of the most moving electronic music arrangements in history, such as This Binary Universe (seriously, if you buy no other BT album, buy this one). Further, he's been involved in the development of a rather entertaining iPhone music app, called Sonifi.

His Essential Mix from 1995 gives an excellent representation of his earlier sound, and as an added bonus contains the "Sasha's Voyage of Ima" mini-mix from Sasha which was the highlight of Disc 2 of the Ima album. BT has been plagued throughout his career with accusations of being somewhat unskilled at mixing records, and this Essential Mix was even rumored to have been mixed by fellow DJ pal Guy Ornadel. It's then perhaps unsurprising that BT would feature a 45 minute long "track" (which is what "Sasha's Voyage of Ima" is classified as) in his two hour long mix, but said track really is fantastic music, so I'm not one to nit pick. The nearly two minute long crescendo of that track which ends at the hour and 35 minute mark of this Essential Mix is downright delicious.

Regardless of BT's mixing efficacy, the man is undeniably a skilled musician & producer which his nearly 20 year body of work clearly demonstrates.

JW / Electronica Classics 025: Underworld Live in Oakland 2009

For the 25th installment of the Classics series, I thought I'd post a set that, while very recent, probably merits the "instant classic" classification.

Underworld holds a special place in my heart. It was their single, "Kittens", that was the first MP3 file I ever downloaded to my computer, way back in early 1999. Their "Beaucoup Fish" album was also the first CD I ever listened to in my first new car, a 1999 Volkswagen Jetta. In the 10 years since, I've purchased each of their commercial releases, and have watched their "Underworld Live - Everything Everything" DVD more times than is probably considered healthy.

Given that brief background, you can likely appreciate how excited I was to see this post from 9to5Mac come through my Google Reader feed two Fridays ago, passing along a last-minute announcement that Underworld would be doing a live concert broadcast to iPhones later that evening. As luck would have it, I didn't have plans to go out that night, so I grabbed my headphones, iPhone, and my laptop to keep up with this thread on their fan site during the performance. I have to say, it was pretty cool getting to watch a live concert on my phone & see fans call out track IDs in real time on a message board.

From a musical stand point, Underworld demonstrates they are clearly firing on all cylinders. As you'll see from the track list below, they touched on almost each of their hit songs, sadly (for me) only missing "Kittens". For even a casual Underworld fan, this is perhaps the best recording of the group to come along in at least 5 years.

JW / Electronica Classics 004: Orbital's 2004 Brixton Academy Show

This was Orbital's last indoor performance before they retired in 2004. If ever there was an act that really defines "electronica" in my mind, it's Orbital. This particular performance spans most of their career with work from their Green album to their Blue album.

I really regret that I never got to see these guys perform live. I've heard rumors they'll have a few US tour dates as part of their 20th anniversary reunion tour, so I'm holding out hope they get a little closer than the UK, NYC, or California.
