iPhone Home Screen June 2009

iPhone Home Screen June 2009

Here's a snapshot of my iPhone's home screen post-3.0 upgrade. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I'm launching all of my apps not on the main screen via the Spotlight search now. Until a Push Notification-enabled app wows me, I think the Spotlight feature is the most significant update in iPhone OS 3.0 (although copy/paste has already proven most useful).

Google Voice has completely replaced your use of the iPhone Phone app?

Yeah, I'm using it probably 95% of the time now. The only scenarios in which I don't use Google Voice is if I need to make a really fast phone call and/or I don't have a solid data signal (because the GV Mobile app requires a data connection to initiate a phone call).

Of note is that I'm using GV Mobile for almost all of my SMS messages, too. In the most recent release, it syncs your SMS history to the app, so it essentially mimics the threaded SMS style of the built-in Messages app.

I bet you've got the Ma Bell network monitors very confused... no voice, no SMS... all data?

So with GV Mobile, do you plan to drop the AT&T text message plan?

Alas, I don't think I'll be able to unload my 200 SMS package anytime soon. The developer of GV Mobile has said he won't be enabling Push Notifications for his app because it would require users to hand over their Google Account credentials. So unless Google releases their own Google Voice app with Push Notifications, there would be no way for me to know I had incoming txts without the AT&T SMS alerts.

Interesting, so the GV Mobile app wasn't developed by Google?

Correct, it was built by this third-party developer:
