JW / Electronica Classics 008: The Delta Heavy Tour Essential Mix

Since the Winter Music Conference is drawing to a close in Miami as I type this post, I thought it only appropriate to bring out one of the classic WMC gems.

Today's choice might be the pinnacle of progressive house. This set from Sasha & John Digweed was recorded in the now defunct Miami Arena during the Winter Music Conference on March 23, 2002, and represented the first stop on their bus tour across America. The recording was originally scheduled to air the following weekend, but got preempted by news coverage on Radio 1 of Queen Elizabeth's death and ultimately ended up airing on April 7, 2002.

Reportedly, the shows organizers brought in a Phazon sound system to the arena for the event, the same kind used in the New York City club where Sasha & John Digweed gained much of their North American fame: the legendary club Twilo in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan.

I managed to catch two shows on this tour: the Houston, TX date at the Verizon Wireless Theater, and then the New Orleans, LA date at the French Quarter House of Blues. That New Orleans show wasn't even part of the original tour schedule, but was negotiated after the fact, and ended the tour with an oft-referenced "shoes in the air salute".

Nearly 4 years later, a documentary was released chronicling their tour across America. It's really a fascinating look inside the logistics of a music tour and has some great footage both from the Miami show and other stops along the way.

JW / Electronica Classics 007: Junior Jack & Kid Creme's 2004 Essential Mix

I randomly stumbled across Junior Jack's "Trust It" album during the summer of 2004, and it turned out to be kind of the soundtrack to my last semester at Tulane in New Orleans. It was jazzy, upbeat, and generally captured my optimistic outlook on life.

Wanting to hear more of Junior Jack's works, I discovered this Essential Mix he did with Kid Creme just a few months prior to the "Trust It" release. Over the past 4 years I inevitably put this mix in rotation as the weather turns warmer and I'm looking for a summer frame of mind.

JW / Electronica Classics 006: Pendulum's 2005 Essential Mix

It's funny how a certain song or album will hit you at just the right time to make you take notice. In this case, it was a two hour mix set.

I've never been a huge drum & bass fan, aside from a strong preference for most of LTJ Bukem's work.  However, in the fall of 2005, I happened to load this Essential Mix on my iPod before a road trip from Delaware to Alabama and was instantly hooked.

Perhaps the sincerest praise I can give this mix is that it practically kept a smile on my face throughout its entirety.  It's aggressive from the outset and never tapers off.  Some drum & bass mixes strike me as needlessly tedious, but this one comes off with an air of playful darkness.  It doesn't take itself too seriously and just hammers tune after tune without letting you come up to breathe.

The timing seemed right to include this as one of the classics, as these guys will be in Houston next Sunday for a show at the recently-opened House of Blues.  It will be my first time inside the venue.  I'm aware their style has evolved over the past 4 years into a slightly more mainstream sound, but listening to this 2005 mix again still has me pretty excited for the show.

JW / Electronica Classics 005: Sven Vath's 1997 Essential Mix

This week's set is my favorite actual "techno" mix of all time. I know the word techno gets tossed around as kind of the umbrella term for electronic music (whereas I prefer "electronica" to encompass it all), so this is actually the mix I use to showcase what true techno sounds like.

Originally broadcast in 1997, I first heard it in 2003 when Radio 1 rebroadcast it as part of their Love Parade Weekend. The first 20 minutes or so of this mix are especially good. Just delightfully synthetic, artificial, and seemingly mathematical. I still cue it up when I need to engage in heavy mental activity...like Stats homework.

JW / Electronica Classics 004: Orbital's 2004 Brixton Academy Show

This was Orbital's last indoor performance before they retired in 2004. If ever there was an act that really defines "electronica" in my mind, it's Orbital. This particular performance spans most of their career with work from their Green album to their Blue album.

I really regret that I never got to see these guys perform live. I've heard rumors they'll have a few US tour dates as part of their 20th anniversary reunion tour, so I'm holding out hope they get a little closer than the UK, NYC, or California.
